The Town
Albox is located between the better known towns of Baza and Huercal. It is surrounded by the Sierra de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres mountain ranges. The countryside is made up of olive groves, orchards of citrus trees and dramatic hills and valleys. There are several rivers and streams close to the town, including the rivers
Almanzora
and Albanchez.
Although Albox is a typical white-washed village with narrow streets interspersed with small plazas, its unspoilt charm has not been recognised by the coach tour circuit. It is therefore a quiet haven despite being only 30 minutes drive from the coast.
The Weather
As part of Andalucia, Albox enjoys the sunny warm climate you would expect though, being high, can experience quite cold winters nights. However, the days in December and January can be lovely and warm, unlike the cold days in the UK. With the exception of July and August the rest of the year is much like a good summers day in the UK but July /August is often very hot with temperatures into the 30's. This is not a problem if one adapts to the Spanish way of taking a Siesta during the hottest part of the day. Typically businesses open at 10-00 am until 2-00pm when they close for a long lunch and often do not reopen until 5-00 pm until 8-00pm.
Ramblas
Just south of Albox is the only true desert in Europe, but when it rains it can rain very heavily indeed for short periods. This can lead to flash floods which dry out very quickly. A Rambla is a dry river bed often used as a road and most of the rivers in Southern Spain are dry for 90 percent of the time. Once or twice during the year it will rain and the Rambla will turn into a river for a few hours.
